DAVID CORINALDI:
David Corinaldi was a member of the Ledgislative Council representing the city of Montego Bay.
In 1876 Cornwall College was established at Barracks Road on PWD property beside the primary school and was called the Montego Bay Government Secondary School.
Mr. E. Lockett was the first principal, followed by Rev. George Herbert Leader from whom Leaders Avenue was named.
Overcrowding soon became a problem and it was in 1910, under the stewardship of David Corinaldi that over 30 acres of land were aquired at Pleasant Hill Estate (Orange St.) where the present institution was constructed.
In 1922 it was re named Cornwall College.
PHILLIP LIGHTBODY
was a true Pioneer of Montego Bay.
After the death of David Corinaldi in 1921, he took over the position as member of the Legislative Council and was influential in re naming Cornwall College.
After the closure of the Anglican run St. Helena school at Market St., it was Lightbody who conceptualized a sister school for Cornwall College and acquired the Beaconsfield Hotel at upper Union Street where the Beaconsfield High School was established.
Later it was re named Montego High School and was the first high school for girls established on the island and probably in the Caribbean.
Students were called "Beaks" in the early years.
It was Phillip Lightbody who brought
electricity to the town of Montego Bay in 1928.
The following year in 1929, he established a Government hospital on Gloucester Avenue which served the town for 40 years before the JLP under Herbert Eldemire, built the Cornwall Regional Hospital in 1968.
It was Lightbody who extended the town of Montego Bay by constructing new roads and naming them off prominent people who contributed to the development of the second city.
